The Importance of looking after your gums

Gum health is an essential part of oral hygiene. Bad gum health can lead to several other issues.

Most people are relatively strict about their teeth brushing routine, ensuring that it is done twice a day and for the correct time. However, while this may be good for your teeth, there are some areas or oral hygiene that many people may be neglecting. Your gums are equally as important as your teeth and should therefore receive the same level of cleaning.

Gum disease is a condition in which the gum area is swollen, red, sore, or infected. Here we look out some issues related to the gums, which can lead to gum disease.

Periodontitis and Gingivitis – Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease and is often easily treated with better oral care and dental check-ups. Periodontitis is an advanced form of gum disease that affects the gums and the roots of the teeth. It may also affect the surrounding bone. You will need a full care plan with your dental specialist to treat periodontitis. If it is not adequately treated, tooth loss may occur.

Receding gums – This makes the teeth appear longer and happens naturally as we get older. However, this an occur prematurely if we do not care for our gums correctly. Receding gums can expose roots which makes the teeth vulnerable to sensitivity and decay.

Peri-implantitis – This affects people with dental implants, and the symptoms are remarkably like that of periodontitis.  Cleaning around implants is essential when trying to avoid and treat peri-implantitis.

Gum Health

Here we look at ways in which you can improve your overall gum health:

  • Change your toothbrush at least every three months or when the bristles are worn.
  • Aim the brush bristles to reach under the gum line.
  • Do not rinse straight after brushing.
  • Pay attention to hard to brush areas. If you have tricky areas at the back of your mouth, use a small brush head to clean them.
  • Floss your teeth regularly.
  • Only consume water after your night-time brushing.
  • See your dentist and hygienist regularly.
  • Avoid smoking.
  • Avoid alcohol.
  • Use fluoride toothpaste.
  • Clean your tongue when you brush to ensure as many bacteria are eliminated as possible.
